The HIMSS Nursing Informatics Community presents Documentation Burden: Healthcare IT Innovations to Optimize Clinician Documentation in Care Delivery.
Changes in the types and levels of care required by patients engaging with healthcare organizations, along with a focus on achieving the tenets of the quadruple aim, have led to an increased requirement for documentation. Many benefits have resulted from enhanced documentation, including improvements in quality, patient safety, and diagnostic accuracy. However, the burden of documentation requirements for clinicians has also led to a variety of challenges, including extended work hours, time constraints, increased professional workload, and disruptions to the patient-provider encounter. This phenomenon has resulted in observed increase in medical errors, negative impacts on patient safety, high rates of clinician turnover, and burnout.
This virtual round table brings together clinical informatics nursing thought leaders to discuss the pertinent issues related to present-day documentation burden in healthcare. A review of contributing causes and innovative strategies will be described and discussed, focusing upon solutions that address how healthcare IT is being actively leveraged towards defining processes and measures of interprofessional burdens in future work among clinicians.
